MARINAC COMMITS TO BROCKPORT

Trenton Golden Hawks forward Nick Marinac (photo credit - Gary Keys/OJHL Images) has confirmed his commitment to join The College at Brockport Golden Eagles beginning with the 2013-14 SUNYAC season.

The 20-year old native of Burlington, Ontario is currently in his fourth OJHL season after starting his junior career as a member of the Streetsville Derbys in 2009-10.  The 17-year old rookie would finished fifth in scoring on the club with 37 points in 49 games played and after notching 21 goals and 48 points the following season, Marinac was traded to the Georgetown Raiders for the club's playoff run.  Last seasons saw Marinac join the Cobourg Cougars where he finished second in scoring with 57 points as the club had their most successful season in history despite being upset by Whitby in the playoffs.  Joining the Golden Hawks this season, the speedy forward has thus far notched 19 points in 28 games played for the first place club and is an integral part of their success.

ANDREW PARKS COMMITS TO BROCKPORT

Trenton Golden Hawks veteran forward Andrew Parks (photo credit - Robert John Boucher/OJHL Images) has confirmed his commitment to join The College at Brockport Golden Eagles beginning with the 2013-14 SUNYAC season.

The 20-year old native of Orillia, Ontario would play a single game for his hometown Couchiching Terriers in 2008-09, before joining the club full-time in 2009-10, where he would notch three goals and five points in 42 games as a rookie.

With the team suspending operations during the off-season, Parks would join the Orangeville Flyers, where the intelligent, hard-working forward would team up with head coach Jerome Dupont for the first time.

After improving his offensive output to five goals and 16 points with the Flyers, he would follow Dupont to Trenton, joining the Golden Hawks last year.  Once again upping his totals during 2011-12, Parks had a tremendous off-season and training camp, entering this season on a high note with four points in his first seven games played, before an injury at the end of September that continues to see him out of the Hawks lineup.

BROCKPORT BEATS WNEC, 5-3

Five different players scored for The College at Brockport Men's Hockey team as the Golden Eagles dropped Western New England 5-3 on Saturday afternoon. Brockport snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and have now defeated the Golden Bears all six times they have played.

After falling behind 1-0 early on, Brockport scored three first period goals to skate ahead of the Golden Bears. The Golden Eagles added a goal in the second period from Mike Hayward (Toronto, ONT/Vaughan Vipers) and one in the third from Steve Sachman (Medford, NY/New York Bobcats) to take the nonconference victory. Brendon Rothfuss (Webster, NY/Syracuse Stars) and Sachman each had one goal and one assist on the night.

Western New England got on the board first with a goal at the 7:35 mark of the first period. Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT/Georgetown Raiders) received a pass from Rothfuss on the left side on netted the equalizer. The Golden Bears scored 16 seconds later to regain the lead.

Brockport caused a turnover in the Western New England zone as Rothfuss received a pass in front of the net to score his first goal of the season. Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT/Trenton Golden Hawks) and Marcus Farmer (Caledon, ONT/Brampton Capitals) were credited with the assists.

Mike Hollander (Thornhill, ONT/North York Rangers) netted the third Brockport goal on assists from Sachman and Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY/Buffalo Jr. Sabres). After receiving a pass from Luker, Sachman found Hollander from behind the net to put Brockport up 3-2 after one period of play.

The Golden Eagles carried the one-goal lead midway through the second period until Hayward netted his fourth goal of the season. Luke Colavecchia (Brampton, ONT/North York Rangers) found Hayward from behind the net and the senior captain buried the one-timer. Hayward is tied for the team lead with nine points on the year.

Sachman finished off the Brockport scoring with his fourth goal of the year 1:24 into the third period. The Brockport defense held Western New England scoreless for the final 22:49 to take the win.

Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/St. Michaels Buzzers) earned his second win of the year as the sophomore stopped 24 shots on the day. Green stopped 10 shots in both the first and third periods to pick up the victory.

Brockport outshot the Golden Bears 35-27 and won 35 face-offs on the day. Brockport killed off all six Western New England power plays, including four in the first period alone.

The Golden Eagles are off for the next month for the holiday break, but Brockport returns to action on the road, taking on Nichols Jan. 11 and Suffolk Jan. 12

GENESEO BEATS BROCKPORT, 2-0

The College at Brockport Hockey team suffered its fifth straight loss as the Golden Eagles fell to Geneseo 2-0 on Friday night. Brockport is now 3-9-1 overall and 3-5-0 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.

Geneseo got on the board first with a late first period goal that proved to be the game-winner. The Knights tacked on a second goal on a power play with just over five minutes left in the second period to take the conference victory. After losing three in a row, Geneseo has won its last four and improves to 7-4-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the SUNYAC.

Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/St. Michaels Buzzers) took the loss for the Golden Eagles. The sophomore stopped 30 shots on the night. The Golden Eagles were outshot 32-28 on the night.

Brockport had an opportunity to get ahead of the Knights late in the first period. With just over five minutes left in the first session, Mike Hayward (Toronto, ONT/Vaughan Vipers) had an open net shot but Geneseo goalie Bryan Haude made a diving save across the crease to keep the game scoreless. The Knights buried their first goal three minutes later to go up 1-0.

After a Brockport penalty early in the second period, Geneseo took advantage of the power play and scored its second goal. The Golden Eagles staged a comeback with a fury of shots in the third period but to no avail as the Knights moved up in the conference standings.

Brockport will take on Western New England on Saturday for a nonconference game. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

WHITE OUT!!

BROCKPORT HOSTS GENESEO & WNEC THIS WEEKEND

After a surprising start the Golden Eagles hit a bump in the road, a 4 game losing streak that reached its lowest depths with last week’s upset by cellar-dweller Morrisville, a game that may have playoff implications come late-February (Brockport currently resides in a logjam for 5th and 6th place in the SUNYAC).

So, how do they make things right again and get back onto the winning path? There’s no better way than this weekend, especially Friday’s game against the team’s most hated rival – Geneseo.

The Brockport-Geneseo games are what college hockey is all about – rabid rivalries that have become a traditions, a culture, within their campuses. The games are hard fought and emotional, while the stands are abuzz with fan support. This is a match-up just as exciting as Plattsburgh-Oswego and is one that carries playoff weight as the middle-of-the-pack teams vie for a home playoff game and one that has meaning for Rochester-area bragging rights.

Geneseo is a great 4-1-1 in conference play with a 5-4-1 record overall. Over the course of the season they’ve upset 4th ranked Plasttsburgh and scored 3 or more goals on 7 occasions. They have 2 blemishes on their record, a 5-1 thumping by Hobart and a 10-1 rout by Oswego (remember that Brockport tied Hobart and lost 2-0 to Oswego).

They are a well-balanced attack. Consider that their top 3 scorers -- Jack Cardonna (13 points), Zach Vit (12), and Rich Manley (8) – have 2, 2, and 1 goals each. So, this is a team that spreads the wealth. The leading goal scorer is Ryan Baluch with 5.

It should be noted that Vit is a special talent – he was 3rd team All-SUNYAC last year. Cardonna is a force to reckon with – how many teams see a defenseman as their points leader? Someone else to watch out for who doesn’t get a lot of attention is Corbin Rosmarin, who may be coming into his own as a senior…in 7 games he has 4 goals.

Adrian Rubeniuk is their #1 goalie and he sports a very good .910 saves percentage and 2.56 GAA. Once this season he’s been goalie of the week for the SUNYAC, on the strength of a 43 performance against Potsdam.

This game starts at 7:00 Friday.

The team might be physically and emotionally spent after such a powerful rivalry, so it’s good that Saturday’s late-matinee – a 4:00 start – is against a non-conference opponent, Western New England College.

The Golden Bears are no slouch, though, at 6-3-0. Their bedrock is really stellar goaltending courtesy of Tim Carr (.958) and Eric Sorenson (.924). As a team, they’ve allowed just 2.22 goals per game this year. With backstops like that, the forwards can flourish, none more so than Brandon Stroud (6-6-12) and Alan Martin (5 goals). WNEC is solid all the way around.

See you at the Arena!

STYLUS REPORT ON MORRISVILLE GAME

Reporter Brandon Wood at the Stylus offers this analysis of last weekend's Morrisville game...

The Golden Eagles ice hockey team’s bus was dead silent following their game at Morrisville State Friday, Nov. 30.

“It was one of the most quiet two-hour bus rides I can remember,” Head Coach Brian Dickinson said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of talking going on.”

Perhaps the silence can be attributed to the fact they lost to a team that was winless entering the game. Maybe it was because the Eagles lost after holding a 3-1 lead more than halfway through the game. Or possibly it was because the team that defeated them kept Brockport out of the SUNYAC playoffs last season and made their fight to earn a playoff spot that much more difficult.

Whatever the reason, the Eagles (3-8-1 overall, 3-4 SUNYAC) could not hide from the fact they lost to Morrisville 5-4.

“We didn’t say much at the rink [following the game],” Dickinson said. “We had a lengthy meeting when we got back. It’s tough when you play a team below you in the standings. You have to pay attention to detail while you’re playing them, and we didn’t do that for sixty minutes.”

Ten minutes later, freshman Chris Luker scored his first collegiate goal, tying the game on the power play. Brockport finished the night 1-for-3 with a one-man advantage, and struggled on breakaway and two-on-one opportunities.

“We really worked hard on two-on-one situations during practice this week,” Dickinson said. “I was disappointed that we didn’t capitalize more when we had those chances.”

Early in the second period, Jeremy DeFazio and Troy Polino scored five minutes apart to put the Eagles up 3-1.

Brockport held a 24-9 advantage in shots at one point during the game. However, Morrisville wouldn’t go away, as they had in so many other games this season, and outshot Brockport 26-4 throughout the rest of the game.

Morrisville scored a goal to make it 3-2 late in the second period, and its momentum carried into the third period. Anthony Scornaienchi scored a shorthanded goal five minutes in to tie the game for the Mustangs. Just 19 seconds later, Marc-Antoine Chaput gave Morrisville the lead.

Brockport found a way to tie the game on the stick of junior Chris Cangro three minutes later. This was Cangro’s fifth goal of the season, tying him with Shane Cavalieri for the team lead.

With four minutes remaining, Ryan Marcuz scored the game-winning goal for the Mustangs. Brockport was unable to find the net, even with Green pulled for the final minute of the game. Green finished the game with 30 saves.

The Eagles play SUNYAC rival Geneseo Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. They take on Western New England College in a non-conference game Saturday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at home in Tuttle North Ice Arena.

“The loss to Morrisville makes our upcoming game against Geneseo huge,” Dickinson said. “We have to start winning some of these conference games if we’re going to improve our chances of getting back to the [SUNYAC] playoffs.”

Brockport has not been to the SUNYAC playoffs since the 2009-10 season. The Golden Eagles are currently sixth in the SUNYAC conference. The top six teams make it to the postseason.

While on break from classes, the Golden Eagles will get a break from hockey until Jan. 4 when they report back for practice. They have games one week later in Boston, Mass. against Nichols and Suffolk State.

“Bringing them back [Jan. 4] gives us a whole week to get them back into shape and get them conditioned,” Dickinson said. “We might even do two practices a day a couple of those days. We have two non-conference games and then we’re right back into SUNYAC play.”

SUNYAC play resumes for the Eagles Jan. 18 at home against Buffalo State, two weekends before classes resume on campus.

BROCKPORT DROPS CONFERENCE GAME TO MORRISVILLE

A Morrisville goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation kept Brockport from earning at least a point in the State Univeristy of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as the Golden Eagles fell 5-4 at Morrisville Friday night. Brockport is now 3-4-0 in conference play.

Brockport held a 3-1 advantage midway through the second period but the Mustangs rallied back to take a 4-3 lead. Chris Cangro (Holbrook, NY/New York Bobcats) tied the game up at four eight minutes into the third period but Morrisville responded with the game-winner at the 16:24 mark to steal the conference victory, its first of the season.

The Mustangs got on the board first with a goal five minutes into the first period. Chris Luker (New Hartford, NY/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) answered Morrisville with a power play goal, his first goal of the season to tie the game at one. Troy Polino (Limerick, PA/New York Bobcats) was credited with his third assist of the season. The game remained tied for the rest of the first period.

Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ONT/Georgetown Raiders) put Brockport up 2-1 on an assist from Matt DeLuca (Skippack, PA/Syracuse Stars) at the 4:33 mark of the second period. Brockport wasted little time building its lead to two as Polino scored four minutes later on assists from Cangro and DeLuca. Polino had been held scoreless since his two goal performance against Cortland on Nov. 3, a span of six games.

Morrisville's comeback began with four minutes left in the second period, cutting the Brockport lead in half. Trailing 3-2, the Mustangs netted two goals in the span of 19 seconds five minutes into the third period to regain the lead.

Cangro's goal put the game back into a deadlock with 12 minutes to go in regulation. DeFazio and DeLuca each recorded an assist on the score. DeLuca, a defenseman, entered the night with just two assists on the year before adding three helpers to his name against the Mustangs.

Cangro was penalized for boarding at the 14:09 mark as Morrisville went on the power play. The Golden Eagles were able to kill of the disadvantage, but Morrisville netted the game-winner just 17 seconds afterwards. Brockport was able to kill off all six Mustang power plays on the night.

The Golden Eagles converted one of three power plays on the night but allowed a shorthanded goal. Brockprot was outshot 35-28. Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/St. Michaels Buzzers) faced 35 shots on the night, making 30 saves.

Brockport will have a week off before taking on Geneseo at 7:00 pm on Dec. 7 at Tuttle North Ice Arena.

WINSOR COMMITS TO BROCKPORT

Trenton Golden Hawks netminder Andrew Winsor has confirmed his commitment to join The College at Brockport Golden Eagles beginning with the 2013-14 SUNYAC season.

The 5'8", 175 lbs. native of Cobourg, Ontario joined the Golden Hawks last season, backing-up starter Spencer Finney, and he would not lose a single game in regulation time, posting an impressive 11-0-2 record with two shutouts, a 1.89 goals against average and a .934 save percentage in 14 games played.  The 19-year old entered this season as the Hawks starter and has not disappointed.

BROCKPORT VISITS MORRISVILLE TONIGHT

Following a Thanksgiving weekend of non-conference play, the Golden Eagles travel to Morrisville tonight to take on these SUNYAC foes.

The Mustangs are dead last in the conference at 0-6 and they sport a 0-10-1 overall record. Their program has been in disarray since their coach resigned prior to the start of the season. 7 times this year they’ve allowed more than 3 goals. And, in 5 games they’ve scored only once (and put up just 2 goals on 2 other occasions).

Brockport should add to their league standing with this game, but, even so, Morrisville shouldn’t be discounted. They’re hungry for a win and as they showed in last season’s finale that kept Brockport out of the playoffs – they can bring it. These guys love to play spoiler and they play with plenty of pride.

Their #1 player is Mike Dolman, someone who lingered on a deep Neumann bench, but now that he has found a place where he can play, has shined (4 goals, 4 assists in 10 games). USCHO even ran an article about him this week:   http://www.uscho.com/2012/11/29/dolman-gets-back-in-the-saddle/

Another fellow to watch out for is 6’1” junior defenseman James Jarvis who has posted two consecutive 15-point seasons (pretty solid for a DIII blueliner) and is on pace to rival that this year (7 points after 10 games). As a freshman, he was named honorable mention for the All-SUNYAC team.

ROBBIE HALL COMMITS TO BROCKPORT

Trenton Golden Hawks defenceman Robbie Hall (photo credit - Shawn Muir/OJHL Images) has confirmed his commitment to join The College at Brockport Golden Eagles beginning with the 2013-14 SUNYAC season.

The 20-year old native of Schaumburg, Illinois joined the Golden Hawks this season after being picked up from the CCHL's Smiths Falls Bears where he played the last two years.

The stay-at-home, rock solid defenceman instantly became one of the club's leaders on the back-end and was named an alternate captain as well.  Thus far this season, the rearguard has recorded nine assists and ten points in 23 games played for the first place squad.

NIEUWENDYK NETS SUNYAC HONORS

Chase Nieuwendyk has been selected as the SUNYAC Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week. Nieuwendyk scored two goals in just his second game of the season against Tufts. He scored the team's first goal, coming on a power play opportunity. Both goals scored came when Brockport was trailing by one goal at the time.

NIEUWENDYK IS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Freshman Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT/Trenton Golden Hawks) of the men’s hockey team has been selected as The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week. In just his second appearance of the season, Nieuwendyk scored two goals against Tufts University on Sunday.

Taking part in the Rutland Herald Invitational, Nieuwendyk made his first appearance of the season in the first round on Saturday against host Castleton. The freshman had just one shot against Castleton, but came back to score his first two goals of the season against Tufts in the consolation match.

Trailing 1-0 in the first period, Nieuwendyk’s first goal came on a power play opportunity to tie the game. Tufts scored its second goal 1:07 into the second period, but Nieuwendyk tied the game up once again. The Golden Eagles surrendered three third period goals and fell to Tufts 6-3.

The Golden Eagles will take on Morrisville on the road on Nov. 30 for a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest.

BROCKPORT LOSES SUNDAY MATINEE

The recap of Sunday's game, courtesy of the sports information desk...

Three third period goals brought The College at Brockport Hockey team to defeat on Sunday afternoon, falling to Tufts University 6-3 in the consolation game of the Rutland Herald Invitational in Rutland, VT. The Golden Eagles are now 3-7-1 on the year.

Brockport held a 3-2 advantage midway through the second period, but the Jumbos tied the game up moments later. Tufts scored a goal at the 2:28 mark of the third period and tacked on two more scores to close out the game. Chase Niewundyk (Georgetown, ONT/Trenton Golden Hawks) scored Brockport's first two goals while Mike Hayward (Toronto, ONT/Vaughan Vipers) netted the third.

Joe Reagan (Yonkers, NY/NY Bobcats) made his first appearance of the season in net for Brockport as the junior stopped 22 shots in 60 minutes of action.
Tufts opened up the game with a goal at the 3:54 mark of the first period. Brockport played from behind for the next ten minutes until Nieuwendyk netted his first goal of the season. The freshman was making just his second appearance of the year. Nieuwendyk's goal came one minute into a power play opportunity. Hayward and Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ/Granite City Lumberjacks) were credited with the assists.

The Jumbos regained the lead just one minute into the second period but the Golden Eagles didn't waste time responding. At the 5:36 mark, Nieuwendyk found the back of the net again, this time on assists from Scott Fasano (Mississauga, ONT/Orangeville Flyers) and Brendon Rothfuss (Webster, NY/Syracuse Stars).

Hayward gave Brockport its first lead of the four-team, two-day invitational with just over nine minutes remaining in the period. The senior captain netted his first power play goal of the season as Chayka and Rothfuss each earned their second assist of the day.

Brockport's lead was short-lived as Tufts scored the equalizer at the 14:53 mark of the second period. The Jumbos scored the game-winner early on in the third period and shutout Brockport for the final 20 minute period.

The Golden Eagles outshot Tufts 37-28 and won 37 of the game's 71 face-offs. Tufts scored just one power play goal against Brockport, but the Golden Eagles racked up 25 penalty minutes throughout the contest.

Brockport returns to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Nov. 30 as the Golden Eagles travel to Morrisville for a 7:00 pm matchup with the Mustangs.

BROCKPORT FALLS TO CASTLETON

The report from the Athletic Department is as follows...

The College at Brockport Hockey team dropped its opening game at the Rutland Herald Invitational Saturday night, falling to host Castleton 3-2 in Rutland, VT. Shane Cavalieri (Richmond Hills, ONT/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots) paced the Golden Eagles with two goals against the Spartans.

Brockport rallied from a one-goal deficit on two separate occasions, once in the first period and again in the second. Castleton scored the final goal of the game with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest and the Golden Eagles were unable to overcome a third deficit.

Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/St. Michaels Buzzers) stopped a season-high 30 shots in net for the Golden Eagles (3-6-1) in the loss.

Castleton got on the scoreboard first, scoring a goal at the 9:01 mark of the first period. Cavalieri evened the game six minutes later on assists from Jesse Facchini (Mississauga, ONT/Mississauga Chargers) and Matt DeLuca (Skippack, PA/Syracuse Stars). Facchini's seven assists on the season are tied for most among freshman in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

The Spartans regained the lead just 38 seconds into the second period to go up 2-1. Castleton held the lead for nearly 15 minutes until Cavalieri struck again. Cavalieri received a pass from fellow freshman Chad Cummings (Caledon, ONT/Wellington Dukes) to tie the game at two at the 15:31 mark. Cavalieri has scored a goal in three of the last four games for Brockport.

Both teams were locked in a tie heading into the third period. Castleton netted the game-winner at the 11:36 mark of the final session. The Golden Eagles pulled Green to gain an extra attacker for the final 1:09 but were unable to find the back of net.

Brockport was outshot by the Spartans 34-24 and were 0-2 on the power play. The Golden Eagles did not provide Castleton with any power play opportunities on the night.

The Golden Eagles will take on Tufts University tomorrow on the second day of the Rutland Herald Invitational. The Jumbos lost to Manhattanville 7-0 on Saturday. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

STYLUS RECAP OF PLATTSBURGH GAME

Here's the report on the game from the Stylus's Brandon Wood...

There was no upset this time around. The College at Brockport ice hockey team, which defeated Plattsburgh State for just the second time in program history when it came to Tuttle North Ice Arena last season, fell 3-0 to the fourth-ranked team in the nation Saturday night.

“It’s always tough to play a team like Plattsburgh after they lost a game like they did last night against Geneseo because their coaches are real strict with them,” Head Coach Brian Dickinson said. “They played more physical than a typical Plattsburgh team and I think that was something we weren’t expecting.”

The game was physical from both sides, as each team had six penalties called against them.

Brockport (3-5-1 overall, 3-3 SUNYAC) was 0-for-6 on the power play, and is 7-for-43 this season.

“[Our power play] needs to play together and play as a unit,” Dickinson said. “You saw as the game wore on, they became individualistic. Guys were trying to shoot through bodies, we weren’t making the pass to the open guy, we were trying to force it to a certain player, and you just can’t do that against [Plattsburgh].”

Plattsburgh scored a late first period goal while Brockport was on the power play. Jared Docking took control of the puck in the Golden Eagles end off a turnover and beat Aaron Green, who’s started the last two games after Jared Lockhurst hurt his ankle against Elmira last weekend.

The Cardinals doubled their lead in the second period on a power play after freshman Kody Vaisanen was called for tripping. Mark Constantine was open at the bottom of the right circle after a flurry of passes to put the puck past Green.

The final goal of the game came in the third period when Alex Jensen scored with 13 minutes remaining. Green ended the game with 28 saves.

“I was happy with the fact that they only scored one goal at a time.” Dickinson said. “To hold (Plattsburgh) to one goal each period is pretty good, they’re notorious for scoring goals in bunches.”
Plattsburgh’s goalie, Mathieu Cadieux, made 29 saves against the Golden Eagles, the third time this season they have been shutout.

Brockport’s offense could be seeing a significant boost as Chase Nieuwendyk, nephew of three time Stanley Cup winner Joe Nieuwendyk, has been cleared for contact in practice this coming Monday. Nieuwendyk has missed the beginning of the season with a head injury.

“He’s a very skilled offensive player,” Dickinson said. “He put up points in his Junior League, which is one of the best in Canada. He’s calm with the puck, and you can see he’s good in around the net and he’s got good vision. Offensively, he will be a nice addition to get back.”

Brockport travels to the Rutland Herald Invitational tournament to take on Castleton Saturday, Nov. 24 at 6 p.m. Based on results, they will face either Tufts or Manhattanville Sunday, Nov. 25 in either the consolation or championship game of the tournament.

BROCKPORT FALLS TO 4th RANKED PLATTSBURGH

The report from Brockport Athletics...

The College at Brockport Hockey team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest to No. 4 Plattsburgh on Saturday night, falling 3-0 at Tuttle North Ice Arena. The Golden Eagles are now 3-3 in the SUNYAC while Plattsburgh improves to 5-1.

Brockport allowed a late first period goal to the Cardinals, ranked No. 4 in the latest USCHO.com polls. Plattsburgh tacked on one goal in the second and finished off the game with a third period score. Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/St.  Michaels Buzzers) stopped 28 shots in net for the Golden Eagles as the sophomore falls to 1-2 on the season. The Golden Eagles failed to score for the first time in five games after averaging almost four goals a game in their last four contests.

Brockport kept the Plattsburgh defense on its heels in the first 20 minutes as Brockport controlled the puck in the Cardinals' zone but were unable to score. Plattsburgh netted its first goal with just 1:20 remaining in the first period to take an early lead.

Plattsburgh took the 2-0 lead at the 7:46 mark of the second period, converting on the power play opportunity. Seven minutes into the third period the Cardinals scored their final goal to complete the shutout.

Brockport kept with the Cardinals in shots throughout the game as Plattsburgh held a narrow 31-29 shots advantage. The Golden Eagles failed to score on each of their six power play opportunities in the game. Bobby Conner (Lititz, PA/Philadelphia Junior Flyers) led the Golden Eagles with four shots on goal on the night.

Brockport will take a break from conference play as the Golden Eagles head to Vermont to take part in the Rutland Herald Invitational hosted by Castleton State. The Golden Eagles will take on Castleton on Nov. 24 followed by a match against either Tufts or Manhattanville on Nov. 25.

The official report on the game from the Athletic Department....

Three freshmen teamed up to score an overtime goal for The College at Brockport Hockey team as the Golden Eagles edged out a 4-3 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Potsdam on Friday night. Shane Cavalieri (Richmond Hills, ONT/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots) scored the game-winner on assists from Chad Cummings (Caledon, ONT/Wellington Dukes) and James Ryan (Richmond Hills, ONT/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots). The Golden Eagles improve to 3-2 in the SUNYAC with the win.

Brockport tallied one goal in each of the first three periods and held a 3-1 advantage late in the third period before Potsdam scored two quick goals to tie the game. The contest went into overtime where both teams played a back-and-forth battle for the first four minutes of the extra session. Ryan collected a rebound on the left side and fed Cummings at the top of the zone who in turn fired a shot on net. Cavaieri positioned himself in front of the net for the rebound and netted the game-winner, the first of his Brockport career.

The Golden Eagles jump ahead of Potsdam in the SUNYAC standings and are in sole possession of fifth place after an eventful night in SUNYAC play. Geneseo upset No. 4 nationally ranked Plattsburgh while Cortland (2-3) dropped third-place Fredonia (3-3).

Brockport struck first against the Bears as Mike Hayward (Toronto, ONT/Vaughan Vipers) put home a power play goal at the 6:44 mark. Hayward found himself in front of the Potsdam net and deflected a shot into the back of the goal for his second score of the season. Cavalieri and Jesse Facchini (Mississauga, ONT/Mississauga Chargers) were credited with the assists. Facchini, a freshman, leads the Golden Eagles with six assists on the year.

Steve Sachman (Medford, NY/New York Bobcats) put Brockport up 2-0 with six minutes to play in the second period. Sachman has now scored in back-to-back games for the Golden Eagles. Marcus Farmer (Caledon, ONT/Brampton Capitals) and Bobby Conner (Lititz, PA/Philadelphia Junior Flyers) each earned their first assists of the season on the play.

Potsdam responded with its first goal of the game with just under three minutes to play in the second period to cut Brockport's lead in half.

The Golden Eagles hung on to the one-goal lead until Sachman buried his second goal of the game at the 10:21 mark of the third period. Sachman received a pass from Hayward and skated past the blue line into the Bears' zone and beat Potsdam goalie Austin Keiser from the left side. Potsdam responded just two minutes later and tied the game up with six minutes remaining in the game. Neither team was able to convert the game-winner in regulation.

Brockport was able to keep Potsdam out of the shots column in overtime as the Golden Eagles managed five strikes of their own, the final resulting in the game-winner. Cavalieri's goal is the third of the season for the freshman and has scored a goal in three of Brockport's last four games.

Sophomore Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONT/Wellington Dukes) got his second start in net for the Golden Eagles and stopped 22 shots, including nine in the third period. Brockport fired off a season-high 56 shots on the night while holding the Bears to just 25 shots on net.

Brockport will take on Plattsburgh tomorrow night at 7:00 pm in the Tuttle North Ice Arena. The Golden Eagles upset the Cardinals, ranked No. 3 nationally at the time, at Tuttle last season, scoring a 4-2 victory on Feb. 10.

POTSDAM IN TOWN TONIGHT: IT’S PAYBACK TIME

Tonight features another critical SUNYAC match-up at Tuttle North as the Golden Eagles play host to the Potsdam Bears at 7:00. Both teams are tied at 2-2 in conference play and tonight’s affair will decide between fifth place and sixth place in the league.

As if that’s not incentive enough to dominate, the upperclassmen are likely motivated by Potsdam’s finagling of Brockport’s postseason hopes last season. For those unaware:

Last February, on home ice, Brockport beat Postdam 5-3. During that game, All-American James Cody cleanly leveled a Bear against the boards, sending the kid to the ice for a few minutes. James wasn’t penalized, but a few days later Potsdam protested the hit with DIII.

The NCAA, citing the power of the hit, suspended James for what would have been his last regular season game – a game, that had Brockport won (likely with the SUNYAC MVP on the ice) would have put the team in the playoffs. Without James, the team fell to Morrisville with just 7.6 seconds left. That brought a frustrating end to the season…and the careers of a fine bunch of seniors.

Potsdam’s self-serving actions (they needed Brockport to lose the Morrisville game), left a bad taste with players and fans alike (as you can tell, I still haven’t dropped it).

So, there are some serious motivations behind tonight’s game.

What does Potsdam bring to the table?

Plenty!

How about a 3-2-0 record that’s seen them produce some gaudy offensive stats against conference opponents; putting up 4 against Plattsburgh, 5 against Buffalo State, and 9 against Morrisville? They will be putting a lot of pressure on Brockport netminder Jared Lockhurst, who has been raising eyebrows around DIII.

Junior Mike Arnold already has 11 points on the season and looks to be on pace to crack the 30-point barrier. He’s not afraid to take a shot and has 8 goals on the young season --- a stunning 1.6 per game. Some might say he’s playing out of his mind (he had just 13 points all last season), but I really think you’re looking at the maturation of a hockey player.

Trevor Cope has been a good linemate for him, as he sports a 1-7-8 line.

#1 goalie Austin Keiser has stopped shots at an .884 clip, good for a 3.73 goals against.

Considering all of the above it should be a great game…lots of scoring opportunities….lots of hitting…lots of emotion. Don’t miss it!
